The Hi-Lo system in 3 simple steps

Count each card

Cards 2-6 → +1 • Cards 7-9 → 0 • Cards 10-A → -1. Mentally add or subtract for each visible card.

Calculate the true count

Divide the running count by the number of decks remaining in the shoe. This is the true indicator of your edge.

Adjust your bets

Positive count → more high cards remaining → player advantage → bet more. Negative count → bet the minimum.
